Youth Mini Grant Showcase - Community Service Projects
The St. Louis Mental Health Board (MHB) will host a Youth Showcase featuring presentations by 2009 recipients of their Youth Service and Impact Mini Grant Community Service Projects. The Showcase is Saturday, August 15, from 2:00-4:00 pm at the Gateway Classic Foundation, 2012 Dr. Martin Luther King Drive. Between 2:00-3:00 pm, youth representatives will present their group’s project to the public during the Youth Showcase.
Projects range from a mural project to an anti-violence stepper contest. One of this year’s award recipients has been invited to share their community gardening project with First Lady Michelle Obama, a strong advocate of community gardening. The mini grant allocation allowed the Hip-Hop Health Initiative to add five new garden boxes to their existing lot at Barrett Brothers Park. The group also received additional funding for their Washington, DC trip. Don Cuvo says the youth services mini grants were created to support projects like the Hip-Hop Health Initiative. Cuvo is the Executive Director of the St. Louis Mental Health Board which administers the tax-based Children Services Fund.
“The Hip-Hop garden project is a good example of how a small grant can be coordinated with other funding sources to have a bigger impact. But the monies are also available to youth organizations to jump start a new community service project.” Cuvo went on to say he was “excited that the hard work of one of our grant recipients will be nationally recognized by the White House.” The mini-grants promote positive youth development and encourage young people to get involved in their community. The projects must be planned and implemented by the youth and must address a particular need or issue in the neighborhood.
The Showcase is free and open to the public. Mini grant applications for 2010 will also be available at the Youth Showcase. For information on the Youth Showcase or grant eligibility, contact Sue Huelsing at the St. Louis Mental Health Board office via e-mail at shuelsing@stlmhb.com
